A new cosmetic enhancement used to to decrease volume loss around the eyes can cause disfigurement, Australian researchers said. A report published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology said polylactic acid can be disfiguring if it is not injected properly.
“PLA should not be injected superficially, especially around the eyes,” dermatologist and lead author Greg Goodman said Friday in a release. “This material does not act as a dermal filler, which would be injected superficially to smooth wrinkles, but needs to be placed deeply below the muscles to be a safer and more effective agent.”
