Exercise is not only good for the body but also helps fight the effects of aging on the brain, says a new study. According to a report presented at the annual convention of the American Psychological Association in New Orleans, exercise has both short and long-term beneficial effects on the brain.

It slows down age-related cognitive decline, and reduces the risk of dementia, reported the online edition of health magazine WebMD.

Researchers analysed three different studies on exercise and aging.

The first group studied if exercise at certain points of a person’s life improved brain function and reduced the risk of age-related neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

The results showed a significant relationship between exercise and brain function later in life and a reduced risk of dementia.
